Memorial ceremony to honor the late Saba Shami
On Sunday, November 23, 2020, a virtual memorial was held to celebrate the life of Saba Shami, a giant in Arab-American politics, founder of New Dominion PAC, and close friend of the Mossawa Center.

The ceremony was held virtually with participants from both the United States and Shami’s hometown of al-Maghar. The ceremony was attended by friends and family of Saba Shami, including his close friend Senator Tim Kaine, as well as Congressman Don Beyer, Congressman Gerald Conolly, Congressman Jim Moran, and Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton.

Jafar Farah, founder of the Mossawa Center, and Suha Salman Mousa, the Executive Director of the Mossawa Center, both spoke at the ceremony, reflecting their close work and friendship with Shami. Salman Mousa remarked, “We are eternally grateful for his dedication and devotion to what he believed in, and for being a compassionate and inspiring person. We will forever be in his debt for all that he has done for us. We strive to be as honest, virtuous, and dutiful as Saba was.”

Prior to his untimely passing, Shami was working with Friends of Mossawa to host Knesset Member Jaber Asakleh of the Joint List in the United States. Salman Mousa and Farah also expressed their hopefulness in continuing to work and cooperate with Shami’s family, friends, and NDPAC, and continue the vital legacy he has built over his decades-long work.
