The Mossawa Center intensifies advocacy efforts to achieve the demands of the Arab communities from the State Budget

The Mossawa Center in recent weeks has put the demands of the Arab community on the front page of the state budget’s agenda; and today, the newspapers "Haaretz" and "Jerusalem Post" have finally published news about the demands of the Arab community from the state budget.
The articles published elaborated on the Mossawa Center’s cooperation with the National Committee of Arab Heads of Municipal Authorities as well as Arab MKs, and their creation of an economic unit, led by Economist Iyad Sununu and Accountant Ala Ghantous , that has been raising awareness, and laying out the demands regarding the economic issues the Arab sector faces.  These demands, which are based on basic community necessities such as building roads and creating transportation systems, will be presented later today as a multi-year economic plan to Prime Minister Netanyahu by the National Committee of Arab Heads of Municipal Authorities.
In tandem with the Mossawa Center’s advocacy efforts, and facilitating a conference with Arab Members of Knesset from the Finance Committee, Ahmed Tibi and Basil Ghattas, the following topics are being monitored to draw out the significance of these systematic issues:
• The release of the 664 million for the development of internal roads and the expansion of industrial zones in Arab towns from the budget approved in 2014, currently stuck between the government and Finance
• The release of funds for the construction of day care centers in 20 Arab communities. The construction project passed the planning stage and was entering the construction phase before the funding was frozen.
• The release of 280 million and approximately 310 development budgets equating to millions of shekels, currently stuck between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Finance Exceptions Committee
• Formulating requirements of the Arab population for the state budget of 2015-2016
• Formulating a proposal to draft a government decision on the budgeting development which would equate to $32 billion next five years
Promoting the idea of a 10-year plan to eliminate the disparities between Jews and Arabs; this is being promoted by MK Ayman Odeh.
As part of this activity, the Mossawa Center has set up joint teams between Mayors and MKs to continue advocacy efforts. Additionally, there have been weekly discussions established with ministers from the Ministry of Finance to further place these issues of national agenda.
Although there is currently a recess in the Knesset, the Mossawa Center is continuing its efforts to ensure economic development and social justice while fighting poverty and unemployment.
